10 day Vipassana Meditation Experience





On the 8th October 2014 I took a train from Sydney to Blackheath in the Blue Mountains to attend a 10 day Vipassana meditation course.

I have known for some time now that although I have read volumes on the subject matter of meditation and things related to Mind/Body relationship nothing can ever be truly understood unless experience has taken place.

So, I was about to walk into the unknown, and felt both satisfied with my decision to attend and very apprehensive.

 Arrived for registration mid afternoon on a beautiful, warm spring Wednesday. There was tea being served and consumed litres of lemongrass and fennel teas to soothe the nerves.

There must have been around 100 males and females signing up; the 10 day course is in high demand. I do have thoughts regarding the attraction to Vipassana meditation, but for now it is only necessary to assume that folks simply want to find a way to control the mind, be serene, peaceful and happy.

This is the promise of Vipassana for those who submerge themselves in the practice. I was ready to submerge completely, otherwise the experience would be curtailed.

We were asked to amble toward the meditation hall after soup for the introductory talk. This did not take much time, and we were asked to simply follow instructions closely as given over the next 10 days in order to benefit from the practice.

The instructions for the first day, for our first 4:30 am to 6:30 am sitting, was to practice Anapana, breath awareness where the sole purpose was to focus intently on the breath as it flows naturally through the nostrils and pay attention to the sensations caused by the breath inside the nostrils and on the upper lip. That's was all.

We then went to be to be woken on the 9th, the first day, at 4:00 am by the gong.
